Programs

Emerado Centennial School academic programs follow the curricula as set out by the Province of Manitoba. For more information about the curricula, visit Manitoba Education's Resource for Parents web page.  

Core, complementary, and supplementary courses follow Manitoba Education's requirements and recommendations. Emerado offers students compulsory core courses and compulsory complementary courses in English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Health and the Arts. ECS also offers a World Languages option (French or German) as an optional supplementary course. Throughout these courses, students receive instruction on the use of computers and other technologies.

 

World Languages

ECS offers the choice to study either the German or French language in Grades 5 through 8. If a student is entering ECS having taken either German or French as a second language, it is recommended that they continue in that language option. Students choosing to change their language option must recognize the additional effort and responsibility required of them in striving to reach the level of understanding achieved by classmates who have been in this language study since Grade 4. Students who are already proficient in either the German or French language may wish to study the language they are less fluent in, thereby broadening their range of skills.

 

Exploratory Courses

As part of the compulsory core offerings, Emerado students engage in experiential learning opportunities through a series of Exploratory courses. These courses incorporate learning outcomes from various subject areas, and offer middle years students the opportunity to interact with learning outcomes in small groups, using more hands-on activities. Examples of Exploratory offerings include:

Manitoba Education states that, "Experiential learning involves structured, "hands-on" learning opportunities that help students discover and develop their career-related strengths and interests...As students process these learning experiences, they develop new skills, attitudes, and ways of thinking that enhance their essential/employability skills. Over time, this process helps students make better education, training, work-related and personal life choice/transitions. Experiential learning engages students' curiosity and interest, and ultimately helps them assume responsibility for their own learning.

Music

Grades 5 and 6 students at Emerado choose one of two Musical Arts programs. They may choose either Music or Band.

The Music program features singing and speech play, playing tuned and untuned instruments (such as Orff barred instruments, recorders, and percussion), movement, and music appreciation (such as listening, history, and styles of music).

 

Band

Grades 5 and 6 students at Emerado choose one of two Musical Arts programs. They may choose either Music or Band.

The Band program features an introduction to a band instrument such as flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, or percussion. Classes are rehearsal-based, with the majority of class time devoted to the study of band music. Opportunities for performance include school concerts, local music festivals, and school and community events.

Grades 7 and 8 students at ECS have opportunity to choose the Band program. Students who have taken Band in previous years are strongly encouraged to continue in this Arts program.

In addition to the contribution, it makes to the musical education of the student, the band program fosters student creativity, self-confidence, self-discipline and cooperative learning. Classes are rehearsal-based, with the majority of class time devoted to the study of band music. Opportunities for performance include school concerts, local music festivals, and school and community events.
