The Arts
Emerado students are provided with course options in the Arts, beginning at grade 5.
The Arts Options
Grades 5 and 6 students at Emerado choose one of two Musical Arts
programs. They may choose either Music or Band.
Music: The Music program features singing and speech play, playing tuned and untuned instruments (such as Orff barred instruments, recorders, and percussion), movement, and music appreciation (such as listening, history, and styles of music).
Band: The Band program features an introduction to a band instrument such as flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, or percussion. Classes are rehearsal-based, with the majority of class time devoted to the study of band music. Opportunities for performance include school concerts, local music festivals, and school and community events.
Grades 7 and 8 students at ECS choose one of two Arts programs. They take either Band or a combination of Studio Arts and Drama. Students who have taken Band in previous years are strongly encouraged to continue in this Arts program.
Band: In addition to the contribution it makes to the musical education of the student, the band program fosters student creativity, self-confidence, self-discipline and cooperative learning. Classes are rehearsal-based, with the majority of class time devoted to the study of band music. Opportunities for performance include school concerts, local music festivals, and school and community events.
Studio Arts: The Studio Arts program increases students' art skills and their knowledge of various art media. Students learn to draw using a proven method, to produce original and representational art, and to enhance their creative self-expression.
Drama: Students in the drama program will develop their creativity, spontaneity, imagination and group interaction skills in a supportive environment. Some of the units studied will focus on theatre arts skill development, movement, improvisation, and public speaking skills. Note that all students are considered for school dramas/musicals, not only those in the drama classes.
